Canadian immigration programs are frequently opening and closing, adjusting to changes in immigration policy. Caregiver programs have changed significantly over the last several years. Please refer to this page for information about previous caregiver programs.

Live-In Caregiver Program

The Live-In Caregiver Program was designed to bring foreign nationals to Canada on temporary work permits to live with Canadian families and work in caregiver occupations. The program has not accepted new applications since 2014.

Caring for Children Pathway

The Caring for Children Pathway was aligned with the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which allowed eligible foreign nationals to apply through the TFWP to obtain Canadian work permits. This pathway was only available to those who had an LMIA-supported job offer from a Canadian employer. Applicants had to have at least 24 months of full-time work experience in Canada as a home child care provider (NOC 4411) in the four years before applying.

This program has not accepted applications since June, 2019. It was replaced by the Home Child Care Provider Pilot.

Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway

The Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway was aligned with the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which allowed foreign nationals to apply through the TFWP to obtain Canadian work permits if they have an LMIA-supported job offer from a Canadian employer. An applicant had to hold at least 24 months of full-time work experience in Canada under one of the four in-demand occupations:

• NOC 3233
• NOC3413
• NOC 4412 

This program has not accepted applications since June, 2019. It was replaced by the Home Support Worker Pilot.
